Chiropractic treatment of headaches and migraine
Treating headaches using chiropractic methods is very effective and very gentle. In 2017 alone we had more than 2200 cases of patients presenting with headaches in our IHR-CHIROPRAKTOR practice, all were treated successfully.
Headaches are often triggered by tension and blockages in the throat and neck, as well as in the shoulder area. Displaced or blocked vertebrae can easily irritate nerves and muscles (‘pinched nerve’) and so cause pain or other discomfort.
Chiropractic treatment can remedy these blockages and misalignments, clearing the muscle tension and associated discomfort such as headache is then resolved.
As a rule, chiropractic treatment can be expected to significantly improve the symptoms within 1-2 weeks of treatment. Depending on the patient, the duration of treatment for a complete recovery may vary because the underlying dysfunction will vary from case to case.
Chiropractic can also help in the case of migraine. Migraine headache is a chronic, episodic, usually one-sided headache associated with nausea, photosensitivity, blurred vision and other neurological dysfunctions (migraine aura).
The development of a migraine headache is very complex and multi-factorial. This means there can be several triggers, such as for example: hormonal fluctuations (e.g. menstruation in women), chemical stress (e.g. tyramine, alcohol, additives in processed foods / products, caffeine) or environmental factors (e.g., the weather, computer screens, glaring and flashing lights) etc.
In some patients (studies estimate from 30-40% of migraine cases) migraine is triggered by biomechanical dysfunction such as, for example, vertebral blockages and muscle tension.
Significant improvement of migraine complaints can be achieved by chiropractic treatments.
